VELAVADAR BLACKBUCK NATIONAL PARK

Formerly the private grassland of the Maharaja of Bhavnagar, Velavadar is synonymous to the African savannahs in look and feel. For those who wish to quench their thirst of wanderlust, the Velavadar Blackbuck Sanctuary & National Park in Saurashtra is the perfect destination.

You can expect to find tranquillity in a land of wide-spreading golden grasslands under the deep blue sky, where spiral-horned antelope or the Black Bucks can be seen bounding up out of the grasses. In close proximity to the coast, are wetlands full of birds. Evenings are generally cool with the sea-breezes blowing up into the savannah. Wolves and Jackals roam the fields during nights and the flat country offers a tremendous view of a picturesque starry sky.

Other animals in the sanctuary include the Nilgai, Jackal, Wolf, Jungle Cat, and Fox, but the other main attraction is the bird life.

Pelicans, Flamingos, White and Painted Storks, different varieties of Cranes, birds of prey, and the rare Stolizca’s Bushchat all live here, mostly in the southern part of the park. The extremely rare Lesser Florican, one of the 50 rarest birds in the world, breeds here. During winters, thousands of harriers arrive from central Europe to spend the cooler months here.

If you are looking to plan a summer vacation, this is the perfect family destination for you.
