Gujarat – Land of colourful festivals Celebrating Uttarayan in January

While Gujarat is a state known for colourful festivals, it’s that time of the year when Gujaratis are gearing up for the International Kite Festival (Uttarayan).

Uttarayan is celebrated at the time when winter begins to quietly turn into summer. Also celebrated as Makara Sankranti, it is a sign for famers to know that the harvest season is approaching.

One can enjoy the festival at its best in cities including Ahmedabad, Nadiad, Surat and Vadodra. The Sabarmati Riverfront is considered as a “must visit” place for tourists in Ahmedabad. Be lost amidst the colourful sky filled with kites in different shapes and sizes.

The festival takes place on January 14 and 15. These are now public holidays in Gujarat and January 15 is known as ‘Vasi Uttarayan’.

The most relished dish during the festival is a special winter vegetable called Undhiyo. Prepared using different kinds of beans, roots and other local seasonal vegetables, the festival is simply incomplete without this dish!
